Thomas Piketty and 100 economists from across Europe put their signatures to an op-ed this week calling for the ECB to cancel its holdings of government debt. ECB president Christine Lagarde said such a move would be illegal and an impossible sell politically. She’s right, but it’s still the right thing to do.
